Rolando Pomfrey had been on the police force thirty years; twenty of them as a detective. During those years he'd gotten more than his share of busts; was wounded four times, and received numerous commendations and awards for his work. Nevertheless, because of his age – he had just turned sixty-five -- he was forced to retire; 'put out to pasture’ was the way he worded it. Although he knew that was police doctrine, he didn’t want to leave the force until he solved the case he was working on. With that in mind, he asked --no, he begged-- Chief Charlie Pendergass, who was not only the head of his police department but also his friend, to permit him to remain on the force so that he could pursue working on it, but his request was denied. Feeling that he was left without an alternative, he decided to continue working on the case on his own time and expense. Why? Because he felt that it had to do with the country's security, a country he loved undyingly, and since 9/11 solving the case had become his number one priority.
