His business career spanned forty years in the iron and steel industries. He retired as the plant manager and Vice President of Manufacturing of an iron foundry. During his active duty military service, he was a platoon leader in a parachute infantry regiment. Additionally, he served twenty-five years in the Army National Guard. At the time of his retirement, he was a lieutenant colonel and battalion commander of combat engineers. He was trained as an officer in both the Infantry and Engineer branches as well as being airborne qualified. He is a graduate of the Infantry School, the Airborne School, the Engineer School Advanced Course and the Command and General Staff College.
