During his active duty military service, he was a platoon leader in a parachute infantry regiment. Additionally, he served twenty-five years in the Army National Guard. At the time of his retirement, he was a lieutenant colonel and battalion commander of combat engineers. He was trained as an officer in both the Infantry and Engineer branches as well as being airborne qualified. He is a graduate of the Infantry School, the Airborne School, the Engineer School Advanced Course and the Command and General Staff College.
