On the eve of World War II, life is pleasant for British expatriates in Kirampur, a small town in Bengal. This soon changes. When the superintendent of Kirampur Iron and Steel Works dies, it is put down to natural causes: hard work and the unrelenting heat. Peter, his deputy, is not convinced. With Indian Independence drawing near, the town is a hive of intrigue - and he has heard whispers. His heavy workload makes it impossible for Peter to do more than suspect something is wrong. His wife, Rachel, has plenty of time on her hands. Recently out from England, she finds it difficult to adapt to her new way of life. She starts to question the strange things going on. What makes the workers so dissatisfied? Why is a shadowy agitator inciting them to strike? Who is behind two more unexplained deaths? Why is Peter the only one concerned about the town’s future? When the decision to partition India is announced, it sets off riots, looting and burning. Hindus and Moslems, who have lived side by side for centuries are killing one another. In the midst of destruction Rachel and Peter search for answers and are forced to decide what is most important in their own lives.
