Esther Hawkes; librarian at Tunbridge Wells public library has a safe boring life. Having been a nurse in the Boer War, she now likes being safe and boring. Okay, so there are goblins in the library basement and her mother’s constantly trying to set her up on blind dates but life isn’t so bad. Sadly for Esther, she’s uprooted from her safe ordinary life and plunged into a world of the fantastic. Not only has she got to save the world from Gregory Mourningstar, a warlock let out from prison early on good behaviour and now hell-bent on regaining his powers, she also has to prevent a deadly virus from falling into the wrong hands. The Purple Death might sound like a hybrid plant on display at Kew Gardens but it’s actually an extremely virulent virus which could kill millions. On top of that she has to evade the Tunbridge Wells gangsters, help Arthur Conan Doyle with his writer’s block, stop the Boer War and attend her Mother’s awful garden party. She should never have allowed Mourningstar to borrow a book on magic in the first place and then none of this would ever have happened. With goblins, warlocks, Manx cats, Shakespeare in hiding, Jane Austen writing space-opera and a never-ending Boer War, Tunbridge Wells will never be the same again.
