The Bertha Udwin Cookbook (English Edition) [Kindle-editie]

This book is NOT about cookery. In fact, Bertha Udwin is famous for NOT cooking. There are only two known instances where she even approached close to the subject. As a young woman, in the 1940’s, soon to be married, she was advised to learn to cook and so attended cookery classes. Bertha's first dish (chopped liver) looked so unappetising that someone discreetly fed it to the family cat. What was more alarming, however, was that the unfortunate animal developed violent and sustained hiccups. Bertha's cooking had stripped the cat of three of its nine lives, at one sitting. The family, wisely, decided to discontinue this line of education. The other instance, legendary in the family annals, occurred in the 1960's. Bertha's brother Gary, breaking a 400 mile, bone-shaking car journey from Beira to Salisbury dropped in to visit his sister in Umtali which was about half way. After a while, being thirsty and having succeeded in getting her away from her crossword puzzle and engaged in conversation, Gary said, ''Bertha, how about a cup of coffee?” ''Ag Gary,” she replied. ''Why don't you rather just help yourself to a banana?”Actually, any real cooking referred to in these stories will always be connected to Issy Udwin, Bertha’s husband. Issy was a very enthusiastic cook ... and eater of all kinds of meals, snacks and delicacies. What Bertha was superb at though, was story-telling. This book is about life and her wry perception of it. These are the stories she wrote. So enjoy already!
