Surviving New Jersey, is a warped chronicling of a life so rich with humor and heartbreak it could double as a Greek play. This coming of age story told through a series of short essays by Benjamin Mehl, a young man reflecting on his life from his childhood up to his late twenties living in New Jersey. The story begins with a chance meeting with John F. Kennedy Jr., in what Mehl describes as, “The day the most handsome son of a bitch ever, cursed my family like a black cat.” As the story unfolds we get to be a fly on the wall in all of Mehl’s hilarious and heart crushing situations, from getting a finger cut off, having his car explode like a bad MacGyver episode, and having to bury his uncle, next to his father. Surviving New Jersey reveals the author's greatest fears and painful memories, but it also points out that Mehl has the rare ability to find a positive in any situation, as well as make us laugh our asses’ off.
