In this 7,000-word short story, the narrator, newly returned to Beijing from studying in the US for several years, frequents--and gets to know the struggling owner of--a small restaurant called Six-Peace, witnesses ugly episodes while taking buses around the city she no longer recognizes, goes on a boat ride with her niece in the Summer Palace, reunites with her college friends, and finds herself chased by a pair of thugs. You hear so much about China these days, but this story will take you beyond media reports and afford you a glimpse of the underside of China's spectacular economic display. The story was first published in the American literary magazine "Boulevard" (September 2007, Vol.23, No. 1). One of the editors said, "It is one of the best short stories I have read about contemporary China .... and it takes some sheen off China."
