On Wednesday, 13 July 1955, at Holloway Prison in London, Ruth Ellis became the eighteenth and last woman to be hanged in Britain during the twentieth century. She was executed for the murder of David Blakely. Ruth, aged twenty-eight, had formed a passionate and tempestuous relationship with Blakely after they met in a London nightclub which she managed. She soon suspected that Blakely, a violent and heavy drinker, was having an affair with another woman. Ruth travelled to the Magdala Tavern, a public house in Hampstead where she knew Blakely was drinking, and waited outside until he left. Pulling a revolver from her handbag, Ruth fired. Her first shot missed him. The second shot knocked him to the ground, after which Ruth fired the four remaining bullets. The crime, Ruth’s trial and its aftermath gripped the public’s attention, fuelled by widespread coverage in the press. The story appealed to the British public on a number of levels. Firstly, the turbulent story of the relationship between a beautiful nightclub hostess and a playboy racing car driver fuelled by lust, obsession, jealousy and violence. Secondly, the middle class cad from a wealthy background and the poor, down-trodden working class girl, with two children to support, and surviving on the fringes of prostitution. Thirdly, the travesty of one of the shortest murder trials in English legal history. Finally, the wave of public revulsion following Ruth’s execution, which led to, the growth, ultimately successful, of the movement for the abolition of capital punishment.
