One of the few monarchs to be remembered by their epithet instead of regnal number, Richard I, the Lion-Heart, remains an enduring icon of Anglo-French culture and history. As the third, and rebellious, son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard’s accession to the throne of England was not always expected. In an early display of his military prowess and political acumen, Richard and his brothers revolted against Henry, with French support, but eventually peace was restored. After years spent crushing dissent in his lands and challenging his father again, on Henry’s death in 1189 Richard was crowned, but would spend much of his ten year reign overseas. One of the Crusader kings, Richard journeyed to the Holy Land and won notable victories against Saladin’s forces at Acre, Arsuf and Jaffa, while striving to reach a settlement. On his return to Europe he was captured and held to ransom in Austria, and would eventually have to reconquer the lands his younger brother John had lost in his attempt to seize power. Though long since immortalised, Norgate’s meticulous exploration of Richard’s life quickly dispels the need for embellishments, so complex and intriguing is the Lion-Hearted warrior-king and the game of thrones being played. 'This book is a welcome addition to Miss Norgate's well-known series of studies of the Angevin kings.' The Spectator Kate Norgate (1853-1935) was a British historian, one of the first women to achieve academic success in this field. Best known for her series of works on England under the reign of the Angevin kings, she coined the term “Angevin Empire” to describe their domains.
