When the Roman Republic became an empire it was Augustus who was ‘always the master designer and the chief executant’. Buchan’s study of Augustus, great nephew of Julius Caesar and the ‘least romantic of great men’, is a descriptive, detailed biography full of praise for the great Roman Emperor. He documents a time of political strife which ended with a great peace brought about by Augustus, who was given names such as ‘Princeps’ and ‘Pater Patriae’. Poets like Horace and Virgil wrote hymns in his name; trade flourished, as lands were conquered and their produce was exported over to Rome. There is a detailed explanation of the events leading to the Battle of Actium, where Antony was defeated and which led to the demise of his foe Cleopatra. There is also a good chronicle of the successors to Augustus, including his stepson Tiberius, and of the women who were close to the Emperor. Writing in 1937, Buchan uses ancient and modern scholarship to construct a portrait of his subject that goes to the heart of Augustus Caesar. ‘[An] elaborate study of the Emperor’s career and psychology’ The Spectator John Buchan, first Baron Tweedsmuir of Elsfield, was born in Perth, Scotland in 1875. In 1900, Buchan moved to London, and two years later accepted a civil service post in South Africa. In the years leading up to World War I, he worked at a publishers. In 1915, Buchan become a war correspondent for The Times, and published his most well-known book, the thriller The Thirty-Nine Steps. After the war he became a director of the news agency Reuters. Buchan would eventually publish some one hundred books, forty or so of which were novels, mostly wartime thrillers. In the latter part of his life he worked in politics, serving as Conservative MP for the Scottish universities and Lord High Commissioner of the Church of Scotland (1933-34). In 1935, Buchan moved to Canada, where he became the thirty-fifth Governor General of Canada. He died in 1940, aged 64.
