Ever since the first sentient human sat on a rock and stared up at stars twinkling in the infinite cosmos, we have all wondered: Why Are We Here? The answer is deceptively simple, despite all the folklore, mythology and religions we’ve created to explain ourselves. Angels are born into the World to live and endure physical experiences, for Heaven is not a physical construct, so that They may grow to be more than They are. No devils or demons, ghosts or goblins, not even a hell, actually. You live your life, playing cards fate has dealt you, then take it all back to Heaven with you when you die. Pretty simple. Except … The Angel Of Death (AOD) has been Called into the World to protect a young woman who is destined to bear a very special child; no big deal for an ArchAngel, teeny-weenie little part-time job. Since Angels can’t interact in the physical World without a body, the AOD gets one that’s already grown up, if not entirely mature; a female unlike any other human being before her. She calls herself simply: Bek. She stands still as the dead; moves faster than any eyes can follow; looks like anyone she chooses to; moves among lowly mortals unnoticed and unremembered, unless she chooses not to; stops pain with a kiss, kills with but a thought; can stop time and stands with every Angel Who is a Soul. And though her knowledge of things not of the World is constrained to the limits of her mostly-human vessel, she knows that she is the ultimate power in the World! Until … A lot of very determined people are trying to kill Clarissa Shannon; nobody really knows why. Bek is her guardian Angel; she simply smites anybody she perceives as a threat. Clarissa is about to marry Alex; their child will be the last Savior that Human People will have. Problem is, there are a bunch of soulless people around gumming up the plan; People without Souls are not supposed to exist. Yet … they do. Bek is concerned. She recruits Wanderers to help her identify and deal with soulless people. Seems pretty straightforward. Until something that Bek cannot even sense begins to poke around. And then there’s the AfterLife, which isn’t really supposed to exist either; but Bek has been there and seen it for herself. There is Heaven; there is the World. No other places exist; for what purpose would they serve? This is the official party lines all Angels know and understand. Now, in an otherwise unremarkable time and place known as Earth, the Angel Of Death is starting to realize that there may be other Chapters in The Angelic Book Of Life that haven’t been revealed even unto Angels Themselves! Some Things Are Meant To Be is the fourth RETRIBUTION novel. Bek gets new Wanderers; Alex and Clarissa get married; Andy Scott dances; a really rotten husband and father discovers the true meaning of retribution; the THING WITH NO NAME throws a few punches nobody saw coming; Bek visits the Pope and gets an ear-full. Where else in the World can you find all this for less than the cost of a bag of Cineplex popcorn?
