When her long-missing husband is killed on a dark street in a city half way down the coast, Suzan Pike sets out to discover who her husband really was and what lead to his murder, a journey that will draw her into a nightmare world of madness and death centered on a big ugly house in a bad part of town. The Seattle homicide detectives were pleasant, serious, and comfortably ordinary. They had driven two hours up to Bellingham to tell Suzan she was a widow. She had been expecting an official visit of some sort from the time Sean vanished nearly two years ago, though what she had imagined was more along the lines of incarceration or overdose, not someone deliberately running him down in the street like a stray dog.Strange things pop into your head when your life crashes full throttle into a wall. As the detectives sat in her tiny living room telling her that her worst fears hadn’t been nearly bad enough, what bothered her most was that all she had to offer them was instant coffee and some stale Fig Newtons. In the months that follow, Suzan travels to Seattle in search of her husband's missing notebooks, hoping they will explain why he abandoned her - and perhaps suggest who killed him and why. What she finds instead draws her into a web of misery and madness centered in the house where he lived out his last days - an ugly red house with an evil history.
