Raised Southern: Philip and Opal Harrison Family (English Edition) [Kindle-editie]

“Raised Southern” praises love, devotion and humor without earthly wealthRaised Southern is a simple story of the Philip and Opal Harrison family beginning in the mid 1940s to the late 1960s. Happiness is the main theme as the four Harrison brothers; Jerry, Larry, Don and Johnny grew up poor but never realized that poor people were supposed to be unhappy. The pranks that all family members were guilty of are included, because none were malicious. Instead, the laughter that followed such things as substituting a rubber wiener in a hot dog bun (that Uncle Ocie bit into) only strengthened family devotion. You can’t read very far without a smile on your face.Family trips were made with a bare minimum of cost. One of the longest took us to Maggie Valley, North Carolina. On the way we made coffee from hot tap water while staying in a motel that looked cheap enough to be inexpensive. It was a blur of excitement as we watched cowboy shoot-outs in the streets and ordered sarsaparilla from a “painted lady.” The trip became extremely important because Uncle Ocie’s family came with us, and not long after, he died. Our adventures, inventions and games as well as hopes, dreams and fears are chronicled up to the point that we married and moved away from home. All brothers married between the ages of 18 and 21, and we are all still happily married after 40 to 50 years.
