Abram Coleridge, multi-millionaire and mover and shaker in the little community of Heywood, has lost his wife. In fact, Rachel vanished three years ago. Mysterious but evidently not taken too seriously by the local authorities. Coleridge was a powerful man and the rumor was that Rachel had just “run off.” But someone had another theory because the local sheriff’s office began receiving anonymous letters that said that Rachel Coleridge had been murdered. Murdered? The local authorities had found no evidence of foul play. But the claim that they had possibly been paid to look the other way was uncomfortable. They couldn’t have that kind of talk making the rounds, upsetting the community. That is why the local District Attorney was sitting in the office of Clete Baily, the editor of the DAILY SPOKESMAN, when Clete’s top reporter, Deedra Masefield, arrived. Clete suggests that Deedra go undercover to help the DA investigate Rachel’s disappearance and possible cover-up. The plan is for Deedra to become Abram Coleridge’s live-in bookkeeper at his estate, The Dunes. So Deedra Masefield, intrepid reporter, is off on another dangerous assignment. Was Rachel dead? Did she drown in the inlet near the house in a bad storm? Her body was never found. Where was she? Was she murdered? Deedra is determined to find out.
