First published in 1894, this is Twain’s last work about the antebellum South. The novel is set in a small Mississippi river town in the first half of the 19th century, where a young slave woman switches her light-skinned infant son with the master’s white son so her child could have a better chance in the world. The book contains all of the elements of a classic mystery of the era - switched identities, a terrible crime, an eccentric detective and an intense courtroom drama. The title of the book drives from the nickname “Pudd’nhead” attached to the new lawyer in town, David Wilson, who collects fingerprints as a hobby. It introduces a literary first - the use of fingerprinting to solve a crime. Although the novel is often humorous, it is a condemnation of the racism and prejudice of the society which was built on slavery.
