Seeking distraction and solitude following her breast cancer diagnosis, newly retired teacher Jennifer embarks on a mid-treatment retreat to the Southern California surf town of Ocean Beach, San Diego. With life changing surgery on the horizon, she finds daily diversion in watching the surfers from the fishing pier. At first an anonymous tourist, she quickly becomes entangled in the life of Keahi, a talented young surfer, whose own challenges may be the solution to her quest for new purpose. Coaching daily from the pier, Keahi's Hawaiian father Gerry, a former surf pro, hones his kid's natural talent while reluctantly befriending Jennifer. When she learns the family's surprising secret, she unites with them to confront what does - and doesn't - identify us in society. January 2015 - Dedicated to Leelah Alcorn, who sadly did not find her Jennifer in time.
