He managed to operate his own box making Company as well, which was a covert source for his funding skills.Despite his hugely impressive contribution to Irish history and sport, Liam MacCarthy lay in an unmarked grave in Dulwich SE London for 68 years Irish people today enjoy the emotion, passion and achievement, which the MacCarthy cup brings to the winners of the Hurling Championship every September at Croke Park. It was designed by Liam MacCarthy based on an old Irish loving cup which his mother had passed on to him.Sam Maguire died in poverty, sick and penniless in 1927 at the age of 47. He had spent his life devoted to Ireland and the GAA. A few loyal friends kept his name alive by presenting to ‘Sam Maguire Cup’ to the GAA Football championship.
