Ted Stone is a paramedic living with his girlfriend, Abby, in Virginia, in 2001. His closest friend and confidant is Beth, his paramedic partner. In his dreams, he is Theodore Stone, a physician imposture traveling with a beautiful young woman, Abigail, along the Oregon Trail from Missouri to Oregon, in 1866. His closest friend and confidant is Elizabeth, a midwife who assists him. The line between dream and reality becomes blurred as events in one century begin to alter events in the other century. The book is part Western, with cowboys, Indians, and buffalo, and part modern with hospitals, lawyers, and strip clubs. Throughout, the book is a Romance, in both centuries, occasionally sensual but not erotic. There is a strong interest in medicine and the evolution of medicine from 1866 to 2001. Other issues include gender, religion and race relations in the post-Civil War period still sharply divided between North and South. With the exception of the main characters, all places, events, and people are historically accurate.
