These are the adventures of Yankton Rondeau, a mysterious French Canadian adventurer, and his talking dog, Barco, who arrive in a Ski Town just before the first big winter storm of the season. Rondeau has magical powers, allowing him to transform himself into a Great Snowy Owl, the so-called "White Terror of the North," or "Ookpik." Immediately events begin to happen. Rodeau falls in love, then is called upon to foil a dastardly plot by a jealous rival as both jockey for the affections of the beautiful Juanita Clarita. In Part 2, Ookpik and Barco once again are called upon to foil a plot by involving stolen identities, Peruvian hoodlums and a murder. Also, the book contains a ghost story, entitled "Saving Face," in which a heroic Chinese woman escapes the bloodbath of a Tong War, only to wind up in deep trouble in a California mining town. The book contains a very short story called "Coyote," a poetic murder story, and ends with a comic tale of trying to find edible groceries in the high mountains, called "The Organic Underground."
