Olga and her lover and warrior-commander, Dobrynia, battle to secure the trade route between Novgorod and Kiev. Their hold on Kiev and the trade route is constantly threatened by Sveneld, the Varangian commander. Steppe people threaten their hard-won trading centers on all sides. Dobrynia’s childhood love, Koshka, is swept away to distant lands by Prince Sviatoslav, Olga’s son. When Olga dies, Dobrynia is left to fend for himself.
