Deborah Hinkle, a fifty-eight-year-old-woman, is once again experiencing suicidal thoughts as she has off and on throughout her lifetime. This particular episode is brought on by the “accidental” death of her mother, a beautiful woman that Debbie never really knew or understood. She grew up in a small town in Canada with no relative contact except her mother and a lovely, accomplished sister. She always felt she was the clumsy misfit and wondered if she was adopted. At a young age she was molested by three playmates, but despite many encounters with therapists and psychologists throughout her lifetime, all of them negated the molest as “just playing doctor” between children of similar ages. Most professionals concentrated on the fact that her mother was involved in a cult for a few years. In her attempt to “work-through” the present drive to kill herself, she goes back through her self-destructive life. Margaret (Marge) Manes-Doty spent twenty-five years practicing as a Marriage Family Therapist and Clinically Certified Addiction Specialist. During these years she worked at women’s shelters, private practices, private addiction treatment centers, halfway houses and locked-down addiction treatment units in hospitals. No One Ever Held Me When I Cried draws on her experiences in these environments.
