Summary: Two men and one love story. Branded a social outcast and shunned by the Victorian society, Lord Richard Archerton leads a solitary life at his large estate, just outside Two Bridges village in the heart of Devon. No one could be more unlike him than Valentine, a prisoner sentenced to the gallows and who just made his lucky escape. He is running blindly through the mist and marshes of Dartmoor, with his pursuers not far behind. An extract from the story: “Wait!” Richard cried out after him. However, instead of obeying him like a normal and sensible person would have done, the young man only threw him a haunted look over his shoulder and then heedlessly ran faster away into the mist. Richard hesitated for the shortest of moments. But then with escalating alarm, he suddenly realized in which direction the other man was running. He was heading straight towards the Taw Marshes! “Not that way!” But the young man in tattered dress never slowed down, and cursing out loudly, Richard whipped his horse and turned around.
