My Son does not know Apartheid is the continuation of Marlene’s autobiography detailing how she came to live in Germany and become integrated in the society. It tells of her life in South Africa and how she came to move to Germany leaving her new-born son behind with her family. The book details the difficulties that Marlene had to overcome when she arrived in Germany, without money, without a home and armed only with the promise of a job in a café in Bruchsal. We learn how she came to meet her husband, Martin, how her son grew up and went to school in Germany and their travels around the world. My Son does not know Apartheid is the story behind the successful integration not only into society, but also into the local communities in which Marlene lives and works. It is the story of her fight against the prejudice, unfairness and adversity she has faced at work and in her social life. It is, however, also the story of how one can overcome these difficulties and, in spite of them, become an accepted member of the community.
