This is a World War II memoir from the lower deck of the Royal Navy - a story of the ordinary sailor and the perils that he endured in appalling conditions. The author served the best part of a working life in the Navy. From the North Atlantic (including the Russian convoys) to the South Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Far East and the Pacific, he served in many different types of ship - landing craft (from the beaches of North Africa to Sicily, Messina, Salerno, Anzio and D-Day in Normandy), destroyers, frigates, corvettes and aircraft carriers.
