MANETTE'S CAFE The novel is set in a small town outside of Chicago, before and during Prohibition. Manette, a young immigrant from Belgium, runs away from home to follow her fiance to the New World. The year is 1914. The marriage does not last. Manette struggles with poverty, raising five children, and brewing illegal beer. She meets people who become close friends, others who turn out to be unreliable. In the end she gains insight and makes a decision that startles her family.
