As a young boy, Richard Mason lived the life of the paperboy, ‘Richard, in the novel. His interactions with the people in the small town of Norphlet, Arkansas, and the surrounding woods and swamps, form the basis of his ten-book Richard, the Paperboy series. It was a time of brown, sunburned feet and shirtless summers, when a boy’s only entertainment was his imagination. The boy's pranks will have you laughing out loud as they put red food dye in the church baptistery before the bully Homer Ray is dipped. "The water has done turned to blood!" somebody yells. Or when the boys come up with a funny book cover that is upside down and they are sure it's worth thousands---but---well, you won't believe what happens. Of course, as all this happens the boys find bootleggers down in Flat Creek Swamp and when they try to turn them in they find out Curly, the town constable is working with the bootleggers. And then there's the mysterious light that appears on the railroad track always late at night. Naturally, the boys, along with Sniffer, Richard's dog have to check it out---and look out! What happens is about the scariest thing you can imagine. So take a walk with the boys who sure aren't perfect. In fact I think you'll find them Lyin' Like a Dog as they tackle the bootleggers and bullies that fill the pages of this novel. Mason has been dubbed 'Americas' New Mark Twain' with his ability to capture small town relationships and boyhood adventure. Lyin' Like a Dog is the second volume in the Richard, the Paperboy series following Vol 1 - The Red Scarf. When 12-year-old Richard Mason’s birthday arrives on Sept. 23, 1945, and no one presents him with a gift, he is frustrated but not surprised. Living in the tiny village of Norphlet, Ark., the Mason family never had extra money to spend on anything that couldn’t be eaten or worn. In fact, Richard believes he’s lucky to even be alive to see his 12th year. Lounging in a hayloft, the carefree youngster recalls recent adventures, including his escape from a suspicious stranger in Flat Creek Swamp, collecting “funny books” to trade for a misprinted copy he believes to be worth a fortune, and dumping food coloring into the baptistery just before the class bully is baptized.
