A small town girl becomes ensnared in the seedy side of big city life while watching as her father slowly succumbs to alcoholism and her mother becomes his punching bag. Searching to find some kind of meaning, Lisa begins writing the stories that will eventually land her a scholarship at a leading university, giving her an opportunity at a better life that she knows her mother never had. Still, life becomes even more difficult to face as a series of tragedies rock her world. Ultimately settling in a dilapidated Victorian mansion on the edge of the sea she takes work as a barmaid at a tavern called Twenty Nine Katz. Though she tells herself she should be working at a job more befitting her college education, Lisa eventually meets the friends and the lovers there who help her discover her own true nature. Will she accept the new life that awaits her, or will she regress back to the darkness that haunts her past?
