Gene’s love of nautical things never stopped though, and when he changed our basement into a ships galley, everyone was impressed. He had built a bar with wood using doweling instead of nails and finished the sides with wooden spindles and black naugahyde. He had put a refrigerator behind the bar and on the wall above he put in red carpet surrounding an arched piece of decorative glass. At the other end of the room he made rope riggings which were attached from the top of the fireplace to the ceiling. The heat vents running along the ceiling he encased with wood making it look like beams. In the middle of the room, on the ceiling, he made a hatch cover with a piece of wood and naugahyde which he had poked holes in. He had placed this over the light fixture so when you turned the lights on it gave the illusion of stars shining in the night. He even poked out the big dipper for me. We had many enjoyable get-togethers down there with family and friends along the way.
