Human Sexuality Gynecology differs from some of the other areas of medical practice in that there is a strong emphasis is on prevention, in other words, preventing disease rather than treating it after it has already occurred. Given that the role is to protect the health of women, some might wonder why a gynecologist would choose to write a book on the topic female sexual satisfaction. Here a few of the reasons: 1) If women did not engage in sexual relations, then the field of women’s health would not exist — there would be no need for either obstetricians or gynecologists 2) Survey after survey has indicated that women want their women’s health professionals to be more open and willing to discuss issues related to sexuality 3) A 2002 study in the US found that nearly 80 percent of women wished to discuss their sexual concerns; however, nearly 70 percent also said that they felt too embarrassed to bring up the topic — but would gladly have done so if only their clinician had indicated an interest in discussing issues related to sexuality Please note that this book is intended specifically for those women who experience distress regarding lack of orgasms. Many women experience sexual satisfaction despite not having orgasms, in which case this book is not intended for them. With regard specifically to sexual dysfunction, here are two categories of women who might benefit from learning Kegel exercises: 1) Those with high arousal but no, or great delay, in having an orgasm 2) Those that have orgasms but only of minimal intensity There are a number of other conditions and diseases for which Kegels are helpful in lieu of surgery; however, those will not be discussed in this particular book. —G.
