In 1895, he studied literature and languages at the Sorbonne, Paris. In 1896, William Butler Yeats encouraged Synge to live in the Aran Islands. In 1907, he published The Aran Islands an account of life on the islands. His experiences in the Aran Islands are the basis for many of his plays. From the first, his plays were denounced by Irish nationalists, but had lasting influence on playwriters Sean O'Casey and Samuel Beckett.
