A valuable and previously unpublished diary kept by James Ward, who arrived in San Francisco in spring, 1847, and began keeping a diary. Many famous Californians appear here- John Fremont, Kit Carson, Liedesdorff, John Sutter, Sam Brannan, General Vallejo, and even desperados like the notorious Three-Fingered Jack. The Donner tragedy is also mentioned, adding harrowing elements to this otherwise pleasant memoir. The early days of the Gold Rush, especially summer 1848, when precious few were aware of it, is a highlight also, Ward spending much time with Sutter himself.
