This is the tragic story of the short life and controversial death of Jacob, a terminally ill ten-year old whose father was charged with his murder which he claimed was an act of devoted love. In July 2004 Andy Wragg, an ex-SAS soldier, smothered his son to death with a pillow. The case shocked the nation and for weeks newspaper columns and TV debates were filled with possible motives and moral comment. What led to this dreadful decision and what led a father to kill his son? Was this a case of altruistic filicide? Jacob was born with Hunter Syndrome, a terminally rare and incurable degenerative disease. His parents had watched as their beloved son became weaker, knowing there was nothing they could do except make his short life as happy as possible. By July 2004 Jacob was "already at the gates of his last dreadful journey" as the jury heard during Andy Wragg's trial. Bob Wragg, Jacob's paternal grandfather, gives a very touching, emotional and personal account of these events with searing frankness, recounting the tumult of dramas surrounding his little grandson's life and death, recalling how difficult it was for his family to grieve in the glare of the media spotlight. Many moral questions, including child euthanasia, are raised, but above all the book is a moving tribute to the memory of Jacob whose personality touched all who were lucky and privileged to have known him. Although this story will 'tug at the reader's heartstrings' it is not all sad because it is about Jacob and Jacob was happy, always happy. The one emotion he was able to show more than any other through all his suffering was 'happiness' Jacob did not know 'how to do sad.' Although partly about peoples' lives being torn apart it is a story of remarkable love and devotion and will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on all who read it.
