Jackpot, NW is a novel about Enrique, a lone middle-aged Mexican man, who makes a living on slot machines in the only casino in the town of Jackpot, while trying to fit in with American society, hoping that the pretty woman who once talked to him would return, and to someday find his way to the oft-mentioned yet nebulous Big City. Spending his days in front of the slots in the mostly empty casino and his nights in a cheap motel, wearing flip-flops and eating cheeseburgers for lunch, Enrique hopes that his wins will be big enough to give him some attention. One day, he succeeds, and is given perhaps too much of it, when a hotel owner tries to save him from himself by offering him a job as a cleaner, when he discovers the local church to which he goes to seek guidance, and when he gets into trouble with the gaming commission because what he is doing is considered to be in a legal gray area. When he meets and becomes enamored with a young woman, to whom he promises he is going to win the grand prize – one hundred thousand dollars and a hot convertible – he realizes that the jackpot is perhaps not all that he has a chance to win.Robert Eriksson is a student living in Stockholm, Sweden.
