Early one morning, Shad Teller, a freelance writer, receives an unexpected phone call from his former college roommate, Pricha Thanarat, now a research chemist, suggesting a tennis match, that very morning, between the two of them. Given the fact that this is Shad’s first contact with Pricha in many months, this seems a somewhat puzzling request. He nonetheless accepts and soon finds himself unexpectedly losing the match to a much improved opponent.
