Isaac Newton explains how he deduced the law of gravity in this fictional speech to an orientation session of the British Royal Society in 1711. Newton explains his childhood, his education, and the development of his interest in "natural philosophy," including astronomy, mathematics, and mechanics. The law of gravity, he points out, was the logical conclusion to a long chain of events where one insight led to another and another. The facts of Newton's life and those of his scientific predecessors are true, although the supposed setting of this speech is fictional. But if you can imagine yourself and your friends in the audience, you may be surprised at the insights presented here.
