A collection of six short ghost stories, two of them – Hobbton Woods, and The Red Scarf – inspired by the greatest of all ghost story writers – M.R. James, and also somewhat reminiscent of the supernatural tales of L.T.C. Rolt, both having a railway theme. The Pedlar is loosely based on the true story of a haunted house where a murder had been committed, which the author researched some years ago. A full and fascinating account of this can be found in The Chilwell Ghost – a New Investigation, by A.R. Dance (Arundel Books ISBN 9780955813320) The other three – Six in a Row, The truth will out, and There’s no such things as Ghosts, are less menacing and each have a humorous twist to them.
