At the age of six he was taught by his landscape painter father, Hugh Antoine Fisher. Fisher's family moved from New York to California where he studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art in San Francisco. At sixteen, he began to make drawings for the San Francisco Call and the Examiner. Fisher returned to New York and worked as a staff artist for Puck Magazine. Recognized for his ability to draw beautiful women, the Fisher Girl soon became a rival of the Gibson girl and the Christy girl. After Puck Magazine Fisher did covers for Cosmopolitan magazine, for which he was under exclusive contract. Fisher is also known for his portraits of actresses and theatrical personalities.
