Who killed local farmer, activist and gadfly Abby Stroeman? Suspects abound, because most everyone hated Abby and her destructive antics in this small rural community near the quaint college town on the plains of Plainfield, Minnesota. Is it Johnny, Abby's frustrated alcoholic artist husband reduced to teaching art at the local middle school because Abby's only source of income is a junky so-called antiques store: the old grieving dairy farmer whose wife died after a botched abortion; or the Dutcher brothers who would as soon punch your lights out as look at you, known for slaughtering Abby's pet ducks? Flora McBride, who Abby's niece Pearl enlists to find her aunt's killer, was herself a fourth generation potato farmer in Florida before fleeing to the icy and, to her mind, inhospitable north with her 15 year old daughter Martha to teach literature at St. Magnuis College in Plainfield after the farm went bankrupt and her mother Taylor died. Still the farmer at heart, Flora would rather work in her yard or rescue Minnesota native plants from land scheduled to be redeveloped, or even grade her students' compositions, anything but chase after a killer. But after she suffers a breakdown because she fears the many ghosts residing uneasily in her aunt and uncle's dilapidated farm house, Pearl and her desperate situation tug at Flora's heart, and so, with the help of her crotchety 70-plus year old friend Hazel Mack, with the acid tongue and temperament of the New Yorker that she is, Flora not only draws out the murderer, but uncovers secrets that go back decades: dreams deferred at deadly cost, a love child conceived during a long-ago smoldering and tragic love affair, illegal abortions and an unscrupulous "doctor," and an enigmatic priest who has more than Sunday services on his mind.
