Abstract: "Golden Gate," a Mexican-American barrio in Phoenix, Arizona was wiped out in the late 1980s for the continued expansion of Sky Harbor International Airport. Long-time residents were uprooted from the place where they were born and grew up, and about 6,000 families were dispersed. A Catholic temple built by the community -The Sacred Heart Church- is today the only remnant of the vanished neighborhood. Residents and the Mexican-American community opposed its demolition. The empty temple is today the last symbol of resistance for many, and a solitary reminder of the barrio Golden Gate. Words: 1,207
