This historical narrative finds new meaning in eight-term Wisconsin representative Steve Gunderson's convoluted congressional departure. I contend the inculcation of allegiance to Republican majority party strategy that the moderate Gunderson endorsed in the 1989 Madigan-Gingrich Whip race hardened Republicans against Party outliers as it spurred the Republican Revolution. Under Newt Gingrich, Republican Party leaders increasingly abided heterosexist rhetoric, inadvertently emboldening local Republican opposition toward Gunderson in Wisconsin’s 3rd District in 1994. The openly gay Gunderson was forced out of office when Republican opposition to his candidacy nationalized in 1996; the specter of a smear campaign by the right wing of his party prevented Representative Steve Gunderson from serving as the first Wisconsin chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture.
