Even the Wind: A Jonas Brant Thriller (English Edition) [Kindle-editie]

A murdered woman. A wounded cop. A Russian gangster. The mysteries of the human genome. Boston homicide detective Jonas Brant gets more than he bargained for when he's called to the scene of a shooting in downtown Boston. A young woman lies dead, shot in the head at close range, the only hint of her identity the clothes she was wearing at the time of her death. This is the dangerous world Brant must navigate as he begins to piece together the shocking circumstances of the young woman's untimely death and the truth behind a research project many would prefer stays relegated to the shadows. Once Brant was a grunt in Afghanistan, serving the greater good on the front lines. Now he's a cop on the cusp of a deadly frontier of another kind.Teamed with rookie detectives Katy Malloy and John Clatterback, Brant dives into one of the most baffling mysteries of his career, plumbing the depths of a world he knows nothing about. It is a world of genes, retroviruses and million dollar molecules, of rogue researchers, dubious science and high stakes. With the arrival of Russian gangster Sergei Volodin, the investigation takes a different turn. Volodin isn't in the mood to bargain. He's intelligent, he's ruthless and he's got Brant in his sights. The body count begins to rise.Brant's journey to the wilds of Maine and the crimes he uncovers is breathtaking in scope. How does a good cop stay good when so much of the world around him resides within the shadows?Even the Wind introduces Lieutenant Jonas Brant in a complex exploration of what it means to be human.Praise for Even the Wind from Amazon readers:"The story just keeps getting better and better as it developed.""Phillip Wilson reels in readers like a fisherman patiently setting one hook, then another and another.""A great read. I will definitely look out for his next one."A question and answer with the author:Why genre fiction? The word `genre' has a negative connotation, the implication being that thrillers or romance novels have little to offer beyond their entertainment value. I disagree. Some of the most important novels of our time have been set squarely in the realm of what we'd call genre fiction. The detective novel, or the police procedural, occupies a particularly important place. I admire and respect the authors of ``serious'' novels, but I find the narrative structure of the thriller a compelling milieu in which to base a story. Thrillers allow for topical commentary on the most important themes of the day. There's nothing more satisfying than a plot-driven thriller built around compelling characters. The icing on the cake, if you'll pardon the cliche, is the opportunity afforded the author to make observations or to comment on the world as it exists at the moment. What are you working on now?I'm writing a short novel about the murder of a rare coin dealer in the days leading up to New Year's. The novel is set during the same year when the events of Brant's debut take place. This next book sees Brant grappling with some of the outfall of the first case, but delves deeper into the issues of identity.  Where did Jonas Brant come from?Jonas Brant was born and raised in South Boston. He's a lieutenant in the Boston Police Department working out of a building on Tremont Street. We know he's a father and that his wife was killed in a car accident several years previous. We know he has a sister and his father has cancer. We know he likes lattes, scones and classic rock from the '80s. We know some elements of his life, but I wanted to keep much of his background vague -- at least for the moment. I want to take the reader on a journey as, together, we discover more about the man and his family. Will we see Sergei Volodin again?Yes, Sergei Volodin will make another appearance. I'd love to find out what makes him tick. Keywords:*police procedural*crime thriller*mystery
