Set in the 1800’s, Crystal Bradshaw retells the story of one of her earlier ancestors. Through Eliza Broadnax Bradshaw’s eyes, Crystal revisits her ancestor’s trying past. By narrating Eliza’s short childhood, beatings, and desire for freedom, Bradshaw brings her great, great, great, great, great grandmother back to life. Weaving fiction with genealogical research, she creates a story about humanity and endurance, reminding us of all that we have persevered. Review of Eliza: A Generational Journey. Written by Galen R. Boehme, Ph.D. "Vision, persistence, and a desire for personal and religious freedom are prevalent themes of the journey that Crystal Bradshaw depicts in her non-fictional novel Eliza: A Generational Journal. The journey still continues for the current Bradshaw family as Crystal Bradshaw traces the history of her five-great-grandmother Eliza Bradshaw from slavery in Kentucky to being a mother and joining her husband in a move to Hodgeman County, Kansas in 1878. The family faced natural disasters, emotional hardships, and family separation. Descendants of the family still live in Hodgeman County and provide a positive influence throughout the area. Even though the novel will appeal to any age group of readers, the novel has great importance to the young adult interested in historical culture. First, the novel illustrates the powerful influence of documented research as Bradshaw illustrates what at least five years of research can uncover about a topic that at times seemed non-existing. Furthermore, the author uses quality writing skills - blending the factual with the fictional to create a very readable account to preserve the history of our ancestors. Using the appropriate dialect of the American Black in the dialogue sections adds to the effectiveness of the novel; the dialect makes the characters come alive. In addition, the novel depicts well the heritage that the settlers of Southwest Kansas after the Civil War have provided so that the present-day values of dignity, respect, and patriotism exist. We commend Crystal Bradshaw for capturing this worthy bit of history so that today’s audience can continue on with the journey that Eliza Bradshaw and her family members began and pursued so vigorously."
