He is a graduate of the University of Ulster and a past pupil of Ballycarry Primary School and Larne High School. A former newspaper journalist, he was also employed at the start of his career as a research assistant to a Northern Ireland Member of the Westminster Parliament. Active in many aspects of local community life, he was founding chairman of Ballycarry Community Association, and co-founder in 1993 of the Broadisland Gathering, the longest-established Ulster Scots family festival in Northern Ireland. He was one of those principally involved in the twinning of Larne with Clover and York County in South Carolina. His efforts in this latter regard resulted in him having the title of Honorary Citizen of Clover conferred by the American city council in 1996. Married with three sons, he is author of several historical studies, including For Ulster and Her Freedom: the story of the April 1914 gunrunning, The Spirit of 1798 and Presbyterian Radicalism in Ulster, The Ulster Unionist Party 1972-1992, Far From the Green Fields of Erin: Ulster emigrants and their stories and People of the Lough Shore, a local history study. He is a regular contributor to The Ulster-Scot newspaper, the official organ of the Ulster-Scots Agency.Dr Hume was awarded the MBE by Her Majesty the Queen for services to the community in Ballycarry and Larne in 2007. He is Director of Services of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, a post he has held since 2003. In 2011 he was appointed as a member of the Ministerial Advisory Group on the Ulster-Scots Academy.
