With her husband’s life and her country itself at stake, she had to outwit the Sultan of Delhi. Some doubted she could do it, but the Rajputs did not call her Padmini for nothing. A woman of extraordinary beauty and great accomplishments even in the arts of war, she had earned this title, ‘Lotus Woman,’ long before, in 1303, her pursuit of her destiny during the siege at Chittorgarh made her story the stuff of legend. Building on the legend, expanding it, Dewdrop on the Lotus tells how this intelligent, resourceful, and courageous woman meets the greatest challenge of her life. The “now” of the story spans fourteen days from August 11 to August 25, 1303. Her trial begins when Ala’ud-Din Khalji, Sultan of Delhi, captures her husband, Ratan Singh Guhilot, the Rawal of Mewar, and as part of the ransom demands that she surrender herself to him. During this "now," the story weaves back and forth from present to past to explore those aspects of Padmini’s beliefs, traditions, and character that shape her response, a response that proves beyond all question her right to the title the Rajputs gave her.
