The American Anti-slavery Society was founded in December 1833. This document contains the Declaration of Sentiments and the Constitution of the said Society, together with the list of the original officers, among which are the well known William Lloyd Garrison and Lewis Tappan. This document has great historical importance, for the exact wording of each one of the paragraphs of the Declaration of Sentiments gives the clear definition of what was the original programm of the "immediate abolitionist". For instance, it includes the admission that in its then current state, the Constitution of the United States would not allow Congress to interfere with individual States as to the legality of Slavery. This is a must read for all people interested in the question of Slavery and Abolitionism in the United States.
