Death at Virginia Beach (English Edition) [Kindle-editie]

Dear Diary : Last night I rushed up to my bedroom to get changed. I was almost late. I had to get somewhere. But then I found myself standing in front of the tropical fish aquarium in my room. Suddenly I couldn't do anything except watch the brightly colored fish. The colors became so bright they seemed blinding— scintillating silvers, hot oranges, and brilliant, bloody reds. The motion of the fish swimming through the water became hypnotizing. I felt myself moving with the fish, swimming back and forth across the aquarium. Then I heard a voice calling my name. “Charlene!" Bubbles burbled up from underneath a seashell I'd just added to the aquarium a couple hours before, a new one from my parents' seashell shop. I reached into the aquarium, pulled up the shell, and put it to my ear. At first I couldn't hear anything except the echo of the sea. Then I heard my name, “Charlene!" The voice was melodious, musical, a guy's voice. It sounded as if he were speaking to me from underwater — from a great distance. I was pulled under the surface of the sea. I was going down, down. I looked up. I could see the sunlight. The waves were breaking far above my head. It was beautiful down here. An island with lovely white sand and aquamarine water appeared in front of me. Colorful birds sang overhead. Palms swayed in the gentle sea breezes. But then I remembered I hadn't taken a breath in a long, long time. My lungs were bursting. I struggled back to the surface, thrashing about. I gasped. “Wake up!" I heard my mother calling. “It's time to make breakfast. It's past nine o'clock." I woke up lying on my bed fully clothed. It was already morning. What happened? Boy, what a dream! I hurried to write it all down it was so strange. I rushed about trying to wash my face and find my shoes. I almost tripped on something lying on the floor. It was the shell that was supposed to be in the tank, the one I must have dropped last night. I was picking it up to put it back where it belonged when I heard a voice. I raised the shell to my ear. “Charlene!" it said. It sounded like a distant echo.
