Currency Lad is the story of a man who played a vital part in Australia's history - a man who is not nearly as well knows as the highway which follows his tracks and bears his name.Hamilton Hume was one of the first white children born in Australia - a Currency Lad. He became the first man to understand and appreciate the new land and its strange inhabitants. It was Hume who first penetrated the rich pastures of the Southern Highlands, the Illawarra districts, the lush river systems of the Murrumbidgee, Murray, Mitta Mitta, Ovens, King, Golbourn and Marybinong; to see and recommend the choice plains around Port Phillip. He was with Sturt at the discovery of the drought-stricken Darling River. He skilfully picked out the districts most suitable for settlement, and the land-hungry squatters - eager to exploit the boom demand for wool which turned the harsh penal colony into a land of golden opportunity - followed him and made their fortunes.Hamilton Hume - the brave, tireless, colourful but naive bushman - has never received the recognition due to him for his part in changing the attitude to inland Australia and its potential.Rob Webster, the author of Currency Lad, was a bushman and writer who had intimate knowledge of south-east Australia. He was a passionate admirer of Hamilton Hume and spent many years researching and gathering up the shadowy strands of the Hume legend.
