Courtney Harrison’s Diary is, as the title suggests, a year in the life of a boy called Courtney Harrison. Courtney is fourteen and, like most teenagers, feels like the weight of the world is pressing down on his shoulders. Life should be easy, but it isn’t. Courtney suffers from a broken down boiler at home, bullying at school and the pain of losing his Mum to a live-in boyf. In addition, money, sex and food are what he thinks he needs to be happy in life, but at his age and with his mother, he doesn’t fancy his chances.MoneyCourtney wants to become a millionaire and retire at 20 and so does his best friend Majid. He doesn’t have any clear idea about how to do it, although he is encouraged by Richard Branson leaving school without any qualifications. SexCourtney does not discriminate on grounds of a girl’s ethnic background when it comes to dating. He likes Leanne Bates because she has silky hair and, more importantly, she asked him out on a date. He likes Majid’s sister, Shazia, because she is good at cooking and doesn’t mind washing up (or so he thinks). And he loves Ayesha because she looks like HalleBerry (a good enough reason for anyone). He likes the idea of having sex but as a first step he googles ‘how to be a good kisser’ (everyone has to start somewhere.)FoodCourtney’s Mum is single and there is trouble for Courtney when she meets a nice man named Kevin, who becomes a live-in boyfriend. Courtney’s Mum hasn’t got the time now to dish up delicious dinners for her only son. She still does a good spag bol but Courtney has to go to Nanna Harrison’s to get jerk chicken and curried goat. He could always eat the chips from The Happy Chippy where he works, but once you’ve stunk of chip fat more than three times you get a kind of chip sickness and you just don’t go there
