Claude is fabulously wealthy and unmarried, footloose and fancy free at 38. As the head of the de Montford Champagne House in France with exports to all parts of the world was well as numerous other business interests, he is a very busy and frequent traveler. His interests expand all the time and he gets busier by the year. His mother, who handles some of the business with him, feels that it is high time for him to get a wife to share his life and she proceeds to organize it for him. She suggests Yolande, whom he had known since childhood who knows his life style and would be an excellent choice, having a good clothes sense and is socially very accomplished, looks fabulous in everything she wears, is sophisticated and would be an outstanding hostess. He thinks about it and comes to the conclusion that it would take at lot of time and effort to find someone else and that he really could not find anything negative to say about her, so he asks her to marry him and she is delighted. He is not exactly overjoyed, but gets her a ring at Cartier and they travel together. He begins to have reservations as she frequently gets headaches in the evenings and there is not much joy in his life. He decides to invite her to go with him on a holiday to Nice for some together time and it turns out to be at total disaster after dark due to her lack of interest in his life and her continual headaches. He wants more out of life and breaks off the engagement and had to flee to an unknown destination until Yolande and his mother would be able to accept his change of plans. He ends up on the spur of the moment at a five star desert resort in Southern Africa where he meets Vlasta, a bush ranger at the resort. They very quickly both become besotted with each other, though they are careful not to jump to conclusions too quickly, but then Vlasta whispers the truth about her feelings for him when she thinks he cannot hear her, as he is sinking into a coma. He hears every word and it gives him the will to go in living. Read this very short story and enjoy the stirrings of first love in a man who is full blooded and ready for it. If you like stories about love at first sight and how a man feels when he unexpectedly gets all worked up about a woman without her even knowing it to start off with and her feelings when she responds without thinking, you will like this story. You can feel the emotional buildup between them. They don’t even touch each other, but there is a promise of deep passion that could quite easily develop later on as the relationship continues.
