Maria Venegas was in seventh grade when her father shot and killed their neighbour. The local papers reported the shooting as a fight over a bottle of beer, but Maria and her family knew that the truth was more complicated. Their father's violent past had finally caught up with him, following him from the dirt roads of Mexico to the quiet streets of suburban Chicago. And now there were rumours of people wanting revenge. At first, her father took to wearing a bulletproof vest, but then a few months later, he loaded up the car, drove to Valparaiso for his annual trip home, and never came back. It would be sixteen years before Maria saw him again. It took her many more years before she was able to begin rebuilding their shattered relationship, by piecing together the story of his life and acknowledging his influence on her own.
